One of the BEST pieces of advice I can give you is:
95% of opportunities say ‘NO’ to
With a caveat…
I had been 100% guilty of saying ‘YES’to everything and when you start out it’s mega-tempting to say yes to everything -especially when the coffers are empty:
- do you want to JV on this
- let’s launch this new product
- how about we pitch X to Y
- podcast, should definitely be doing more podcasts
- and so on
There comes a point where there is only so much of you to go around -and you can become something I learned about in my headhunting days -a ‘busy fool’.
And that simply means that you are doing things that make you feel like you are doing work, making progress and so forth -but actually you are either lying to yourself or doing something that is in fact helping someone else at the expense of your time and energy.
A simple phrase Dextertaught me:
‘Does it serve you?’
^^^ that is the filter I run everything through now.
Does whatever the opportunity presented to me:
- move me closer, or
- take me away from my goal
That’s why you hear me and others banging on about a strategy -everything I do now serves ‘PLANET DAN’.
That means it helps me grow my business, serve you guys more and is in line with my core values and beliefs.
If it doesn’t fit in with this?
Some people can get a little bit ‘butt-hurt’ by it but that’s ok -you have to focus on you.
REMEMBER: FIT YOUR OXYGEN MASK FIRST!
The majority of the stuff that gets offered to you isn’t what you should be focusing on.
Instead of hopping from cock to cock to cock-just choose the cock that serves yet the best.
And work that cock!
(This is how I am mentored by Dexter. It’s fucking amazing!)
So before you say ‘yes’to anything?
Take a moment and think perhaps you should say ‘no’…
