The Art Of Social Media
Social media is here to stay; and if you don’t leverage in your business
That’s fine
There are LOTS of ways to get traffic from paid ads, print, email, banner ads, networking, events
All sorts
But it’s a medium that’s at your fingertips – and a tonne of other peoples as well – so if you have the time, inclination and understand THERE IS NO EXACT SCIENCE (unless you work for one of the platforms) – just principles
Y’all be good
I thought I would just brain dump a load of stuff that I do – or have seen work – and you can cherry pick from the ones you like
So here we go:
1. Experiment with posting more (if you don’t do much) or less (if you post a tonne) and see how your stats change
2. Vary the time of day you post
3. Rotate through the different mediums available eg: lives, videos, pics, polls, questions etc
4. Reply to every comment and like it – batch it up if you have a lot
5. Use questions sparingly; people are often looking to you for answers – not to provide them for you
6. Think of your content as a ‘recipe’; too much of one ‘ingredient’ and it won’t ‘taste’ nice
7. Leverage the current conversation; what’s going on in the world, your clients lives, common problems etc
8. Don’t be afraid to do competitions or challenges – and give away your time, products of ££ as prizes
9. Be consistent – pick a schedule you can keep to and stick to it
10. Be a good social media user – comment, like and share others work
11. If you create content for your wall or a group DON’T spam it everywhere because people notice and it looks shit
12. Polarity does work and if that’s your poison and you’re doing it for the right reason (and NOT just attention)
it’s a great tool BUT be mindful of potential fallout
13. It’s your feed – talk about what you want – but always be thinking ‘would anyone care about this’
14. Images + text = wins
15. Think about composition of your copy – blocks of text is hard to read
16. Make sure the first 2-3 lines are killer and hook people in
17. With your images my advice is either make it congruent with the copy OR a pattern interrupt style
18. If you are going to promote yourself on social media be smart; it’s their platform don’t take the piss with links etc – get people interested in you first
19. Give value and put a bit of effort in (prep for lives)
20. Long copy DOES work on social media if a) you know how to write good copy and b) if you have a good story to tell or c) if what you are saying is massively valuable
21. Infotainment is your friend
22. If you have a piece of content you really need to make go far – manually reach out to people to like/comment/share (but only IF it’s useful and don’t take the piss)
23. Be real, because everyone – yes everyone – can spot BS a mile off nowadays and the tones of rented cars, ballet Air BNB’s etc are gone. Don’t be afraid to share real life highs and lows IN TIME
24. Equally if your are successful – there’s nothing wrong with sharing your success; ultimately you need to live the life you are selling
25. Remember you are talking to real people – if you wouldn’t say that to their face in person don’t be a keyboard warrior make sure you can back up your words with actions
26. If you want to harness social media make your profiles public and you can block whoever you want
27. Have some fun with it – it’s not ‘real life’ – it’s chewing gum for the brain BUT is one of the best ways to rapidly break down the know/like/trust barrier IF you are congruent with your message and don’t try be someone you are not
